Deaf issue of m/c - a journal of media and culture

The “Deaf” issue of m/c [M/C Journal, Vol. 13, No. 3 (2010)] is now available online. M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998 as a place of public intellectualism analysing and critiquing the meeting of media and culture.  You may be interested in my contribution Representations of Deafness and Deaf People in Young Adult Fiction. 


Miriam Nathan Lerner contributed Narrative Function of Deafness and Deaf Characters in Film. Miriam's documentary, The Heart of the Hydrogen Jukebox is a must see! Check out my interview with her in 2007!

Is membership to a professional organization on your 'To Do' list?

I have been invited to serve as the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN) State Representative for Washington D.C. As one of the State Representatives, my goal is to spread the word about ALAN and to recruit at least 10 NEW members.

Why not become a member of the leading society dedicated to the study of Young Adult Literature? When you become an ALAN member, you receive a subscription to the journal The ALAN Review (that's three issues!), not to mention joining one of the largest and most active professional organizations devoted to young adult literature. Membership dues are only $20.00 per year!!! One of my favorite sections in The ALAN Review called Clip & File reviews newly published adolescent literature books. ALAN supports books with deaf characters enabling me to publish an article in their Summer 2007 issue and featuring book reviews with deaf characters including Jacqueline Woodson's 2007 novel, Feathers.

The ALAN website includes tons of book recommendations and a book club! On the third Wednesday of the month, there is an online discussion of young adult books with experts in the field and authors.

Here on my Blog, I have 140 contemporary books listed including some upcoming publications. In the latest issue of my newsletter (coming in September), you’ll find the section ‘My Bookshelf’ which includes six new titles (including two series of comic books) with Deaf Characters. There are also six additional books in the ‘New in the Bookstore for 2007’ section.

You'll also be able to read my story ‘Hearing authors who are including Deaf Characters’. Wow, are they doing their research! These authors have been inspired by actual deaf people. They are collaborating with members of the Deaf community; some hold degrees in fields connected with deafness; and, one even has a deaf son who was the inspiration for her book.
